The Nail That Sticks Up Gets Hammered Down (And That’s Good For Business)

There is a saying in Japan that always makes me smile…and think.

You may have heard it too?

It goes like this:

Deru kui wa utareru

Which roughly translates as; ‘The nail that sticks up gets hammered down’.

So what does it mean?

Well, I think it infers that to get ahead in life you should keep your head down, avoid drawing attention to yourself, and generally agree with the prevailing views.

Well, you know what?

Keeping quiet and not rocking the boat might’ve been a good survival strategy in the past, but these days, especially working as a copywriter and content creator, I can assure you it doesn’t cut the mustard!

Nope.

Not one tiny bit.

To succeed nowadays, you really have to be seen and heard and deliver the goods.

Basically shrinking violets need not apply.

In fact, the question most asked in The Copywriter Facebook Group I manage is how do I get new clients? And in part, the answer is simple:

‘Get yourself noticed, be found, be findable.’

Who do you think stands out in a good way and delivers the goods?

Go on, make your mark, and let me know in the comments.
